Red Hot Chili Peppers Brought The Jams In "Blood Sugar Sex Magik"
/The Red Hot Chili Peppers are known to bring good vibes and big jams, but there's never quite been a record like this one. Red Hot Chili Peppers brought the jams in Blood Sugar Sex Magik, their 1991 effort that combined funk, groove, and funk into one hour-long party.
Everything that makes Red Hot Chili Peppers so great is present in Blood Sugar Sex Magik. It begins dynamically with the funky 'The Power Of Equality,' the almost tantalizing vocals from Anthony Kiedis capturing you from the very start. The band never loses their groove throughout the entire record, each track offering some form of drive or fun to keep you wrapping in and moving. The same wild, funky energy that turns into an awesome jam by the end of 'If You Have To Ask' is the same bombast chaos that takes the record out on the eight-minute groove 'Sir Psycho Sexy' (not including the fun and silly closer 'They're Red Hot,' that is).
While it may be simple to just write this record off as a long jam session, it's much more than that. There's lots of dynamic to it. Softer moments like the classic, drug-ridden 'Under The Bridge' and the calming 'I Could Have Lied' are dotted in the record, while more rambunctious and wild takes like 'The Greeting Song' and the punky 'Suck My Kiss' play fittingly with them. Different kinds of track like the folky 'Breaking The Girl' also help add some different colors to the record. What sticks the most are undoubtedly the jamming sections where the band really take off, especially the end 'Funky Monks' which simply explodes with energy by the end. This band has an amazing talent at bringing the energy down and bringing it straight back up effortlessly.
The Red Hot Chili Peppers brought the jams in Blood Sugar Sex Magik, never losing sight of their groove and energy for a full hour-long effort. It's a very dynamic record, but at the end of the day it's a truly fun one that'll keep you engaged and moving until the very end. You don't come across something like this to often anymore.
